The Cotton Companies, a real estate development and investment firm in Columbus, GA, announces Atlanta-based taqueria Tuza Taco coming to the former Sputnik Bar. The historic building is currently under development as an extension of the Midcity District outside of Midcity Yards.
Owner Jason Sherman first opened Tuza Taco in October 2018 in Atlanta’s Berkeley Park neighborhood along the heavily traveled Howell Mill Road. Following four years of operations, the taco shop will expand to the Columbus area and open its second location at the former dive bar. An ode to Mexico City street food, Tuza’s menu will consist of a variety of tacos, frozen margaritas, and other Mexican street fare.
The Sputnik building was built in the early 1950s and started out as Andrew’s Grocery before becoming a frequented dive bar. The Cotton Companies, the real estate developers behind Midcity Yards and Highside Market, announced construction on the site last month with plans to reuse as much of the historic building’s outer shell to build upon, featuring a full bar, added patio space, and a visitor parking lot. As part of the firm’s long-term plans to revitalize and extend the Midcity District, the former church directly across the street has been purchased for redevelopment along with plans for adding multi-family housing in the area.
Announcements on Tuza Taco’s opening will be released in the coming months. General information and updates can be found online at our website or via Instagram by following @thecottoncompanies and @midcityyards.
